Dun, which appears as a prefix for many Scottish and Irish place names, is the Pictish word for 'place of strength'. No other castle in Scotland has a more spectacular setting and outlook than Dunnottar.

Dunnottar Castle Full Day

Crossing the Tay Bridge for Dundee, we take the scenic coastal route, passing through Arbroath and Montrose to Stonehaven and the 12th century Dunnottar Castle, chosen as the dramatic venue for Zeffirelli's film version of Hamlet. Surrounded on three sides by sea, on cliffs 160ft/50m high, and on the fourth by a steep drop and 'curtain wall', it is almost an island. The earliest complete structure, the L plan keep, was built in the late 14th century. The ruined castle has a bloody history stretching over several centuries.
There is then a wide choice of other visits; Fettercain Distillery, Crathes Castle (see Royal Deeside tour) or perhaps Arbroath Abbey (and its new visitor centre) regarded by many as the very cradle of the nation. Return via the Cairn O' Mount. (See Royal Deeside tour)
